Asipulo, formed in 1992, is the newest town of the Province of Ifugao. It was formerly part of the Municipality of Kiangan, the old capital of the Province. Pula, where the JCAMPBELL Park is located, is one of nine Barangays that make up Asipulo.
The Ifugao Province, meanwhile, is one of six provinces that make up the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), a land-locked region on the northern portion of Luzon Island.
Asipulo is located on the lower southern portion of the Cordillera Mountain range, the largest range in the country and home to numerous indigenous Philippine tribes. Three of these tribes are in Asipulo: the Tuwali sub-group, the Ayangan and the Kalanguya tribes, each with their distinct languages.
Kaley-i, the language spoken by the Ayangans in Pula, is used widely across all tribes as well as in the neighboring barangays around Pula. Ilocano, however, is spoken by almost all people in the CAR; Tagalog and English are also widely spoken.
Asipulo’s elevation ranges from 450 meters to 1,800 meters above sea level. The JCAMPBELL Park is midway on Mt. Situ (or Mount C-2), the historical site where the 11th Infantry USAFIL soldiers made their headquarters while conducting guerilla raids against the Japanese forces occupying several other municipalities during the Second World War.
The topography of Asipulo is generally classified as steep to very steep and rugged. The main source of income is agriculture, specifically rice and vegetable farming. Pula, where the Park is located, is one of three Barangays that produce Robusta coffee.
The lower portions of the municipality are allotted to farming where the mountainsides are carved into rice paddies, or terraces, for rice production. The rice terraces here are different from those in Banaue, Mayaoyao, Kiangan and Hungduan in that they are more shallow, and the walls are made of soil rather than stones. Indeed, all of the Ifugao people subsist on rice and rice production.
Average temperatures range from 19°C to 12°C.
